Aigner – from bookbinder to leather collection
The Hungarian bookbinder Etienne Aigner early on found a great interest in the design and processing of leather goods. Accordingly, he designed various bag collections for many of the haute couture houses. Due to his increasing popularity, it was only a matter of time before he even started designing for Christian Dior and Hermés. Finally, in 1950, he founded his own boutique in New York City, “Etienne Aigner, Inc.” His monogram also found its origins here: the horseshoe designed from his initials. A few years later, Aigner finally opened his first showroom in Manhattan. From the beginning he saw the upper class as his direct customers. In 1965, Etienne Aigner AG was founded in Munich, which not only supplies the American market but also the world with designer pieces under the Aigner name.
Colors and inspiration
If you look at individual Aigner products, one element in particular will always stand out: the incredibly strong colors that have always been used in the individual textiles and leather goods. Not only can the Italian touch be derived from this, but also the elaborate manual work to create this result. This creates the iconic color “Antic Red”, which is still one of Aigner’s best-known trademarks today. The design and associated color is a direct homage to the Tuscan red wine Chianti Classico. Not only does the first impression appear particularly elegant, but it also impresses with its first-class workmanship.
Through the ages
At the turn of the millennium there were several hundred Aigner branches worldwide. But with the growing success, additional target groups should also be won. So the Munich manufacturer decided to also design products for the middle class, which went against Etienne Aigner's original intention. However, as popularity continued to rise, this was the next logical step. However, with a few exceptions, the individual items of clothing will continue to be produced in Italy in order to maintain the usual quality. Another step towards a larger audience came in 2014 in the form of children's fashion and shoes. It is therefore important for Aigner to keep up with the times without undermining the spirit of Etienne Aigner. That accounts for a large part of the success.
