Even as a teenager, Alexander McQueen took great pleasure in tailoring clothes and fashion pieces for his sisters. He later turned this passion into a career. He began his training as a tailor in London at the age of 16 before completing his master's degree at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 1992. That same year he met Vogue stylist Isabella Blow, who purchased his entire graduate collection and acted as a mentor from then on. A year later he founded his own label. The stylized skull became established as an early trademark of the Alexander McQueen brand. The ultra-low-rise hipsters also attracted national attention. The extroverted designer skillfully knew how to combine old-fashioned and futuristic elements to create an unmistakable language of shapes and colors.
Fashion shows as a skillfully used stylistic device
Alexander McQueen's fashion shows tended to be provocative. For example, the designer had his models walk down the catwalk covered in blood when he presented his collection. In 1995 he presented his naked butt to journalists as part of another show. Despite, or perhaps because of, the many border crossings, McQueen was named British Designer of the Year at the 1996 British Fashion Awards.
From the new millennium onwards, the label finally managed to expand all over the world. This was not least due to the entry of the French group PPR. The globally active global player brought Alexander McQueen to all the world's major cities with several stores. In 2010, after increasing success, the death of the designer was a big shock for all fans and followers.
The spirit of the label is carried on today by former co-designer Sarah Burton. Initially, the company only produced fashion items for women. The brand has now expanded its target group to include men of creation. While Alexander McQueen sets fashionable accents for women with graphic shapes and laser cuts, among other things, the men's collection scores with a more simple, glamorous style.
