The origins of the Céline label lie in Paris. The brand was founded there in 1945 by the couple Céline and Richard Vipiana and named after the woman's first name. The couple's original business idea was to produce exclusive children's shoes. However, since these shoes impressed so many mothers that they also wanted a pair for themselves, the label soon expanded its range to include luxurious shoes for women - the brand's far-reaching triumph began.
Breakthrough through must-haves
However, the Céline brand did not achieve its final breakthrough into the top league of the fashion world through the sale of shoes, but rather through the production of so-called “must-haves”. In 1966, the company began producing various accessories such as belts, handbags and gloves from very high-quality leather. The good quality of these products meant that the label, which previously only had a few branches in the Paris area, became known outside of France and was able to expand into all possible countries around the world. To this day, the label stands for outstanding quality in leather goods that are considered “must-haves”. It is not uncommon for the introduction of a new handbag to create waiting lists all over the world, as the rush for it is so huge.
The company ultimately used its great popularity to also design women's fashion. The founder of the label sees this as a “homage to the modern woman”, namely to a woman who can live her life independently without being patronized. This can always be seen in the outfits: at Céline, suitability for everyday use always meets ultra-modern design.
Various designers shaped the image of the brand
Many outstanding designers have worked for the Céline label. From 1998 to 2004, for example, Michael Kors, who founded a well-known label himself, designed fashion for Céline. Roberto Menichetti and Ivana Omazic also worked for the brand. Hedi Slimane has been responsible as chief designer at Céline since 2018. The young Frenchman always relies on unusual and sometimes controversial styles.
