Escada – A German success story
Escada goes back to the Swedish model Margaretha Ley. The seamstress, who trained at the Royal Court in Stockholm, founded the company in Munich in 1976 together with her husband, the German entrepreneur Wolfgang Ley. While Margaretha took over the creative part as chief designer, Wolfgang took care of finances and sales. The brand name Escada comes from the name of an Irish racehorse. In 1978, Escada presented its first complete fashion collection for women. With its colorful designs made from high-quality fabrics, the fashion label quickly made a name for itself in the field of upscale evening and business fashion for women in the 1980s. Bright color combinations and gold buttons became the trademark of Escada's fashion.
Escada went public in 1986 and achieved record growth in the following years by expanding its store network worldwide. The label attracted great international attention through its advertising campaigns in the 1980s and 1990s, for which supermodels such as Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Claudia Schiffer and Christy Turlington were hired. Escada's worldwide fame was also ensured by the fact that world stars such as Kim Basinger, Demi Moore and Princess Diana appeared in the fashion label's creations.
An eventful history
Until the early 1990s, Escada continued its rapid international expansion, including through the takeover of other fashion brands. For a while, the Munich-based label was even considered the largest women's fashion company in the world. The range has also been greatly expanded to include handbags, shoes, jewelry, accessories and fragrances.
But the expansion progressed too quickly and the company ran into serious financial difficulties in 1992, the year founder Margaretha Ley died. In the years that followed, the fashion label went through a very eventful history with several restructurings, changes of ownership and new management. The business has now been concentrated on the core brand Escada and the secondary brand Escada Sport, which has a slightly sportier and cheaper orientation.
