The story behind the fashion power Gucci
Gucci's origins lie in the Italian city of Florence, where the brand was founded in 1921 by master saddler Guccio Gucci. At that time it was still a small workshop where various leather goods and luggage were made and sold, but over time more and more Gucci stores were added throughout Italy.
The Gucci brand's final breakthrough came with the release of a handbag with a bamboo handle, the so-called Bamboo Bag, in 1947. The bamboo handle was actually only used because other resources were very scarce at the time, but it was daring Design catapulted Gucci to the top of the fashion world.
From this point on, Gucci continued to impress with its high-quality leather goods and luxury handbags. Gucci stores outside of Italy were quickly added and the brand made a name for itself around the world.
In the 1970s, the brand took a new step and decided to also design clothing and create perfumes. Both the introduction of the clothing line and the fragrances were very successful, so that Gucci finally established itself at the top of the luxury brands.
Reflect on your own roots
Gucci is currently the most valuable company in Italy, ahead of other brands such as Ferrari or Armani, and is in 44th place in the international Interbrand ranking, which lists the most valuable brands in the world, ahead of large companies such as Ebay.
However, if you look back a bit in the history of the brand, this development seems anything but self-evident. After Gucci's rapid rise in the middle of the 20th century, the fall followed. After the founder's grandchildren had run down the brand through questionable decisions, including the sale of licenses, the brand was taken over piecemeal by an investment company in the 1980s - Gucci increasingly lost its luster and value.
But the brand managed to free itself from this slump. Due to the crisis, Gucci had to change its strategy and began to return to its roots: the production of high-quality luxury clothing. The brand also repeatedly relied on very unusual and colorful designs. This combination of, on the one hand, high-quality exclusive fashion and, on the other hand, very flashy and colorful fashion pieces was well received by many customers and allowed the company's success story to live on.
