How Jimmy Choo became the sought-after shoe designer Jimmy Choo
Jimmy Chow, his real name, was born into a shoemaking family in Malaysia. Here he learned the traditional craft of shoemaking from his father, which later helped him achieve world fame. It was only when he traveled to London to study at the “College of Fashion” that Chow incorrectly became the name Choo. After successfully completing his studies and gaining practical experience at the Swiss shoe company Bally, he opened his first shoe store in the London district of Hackney.
His craftsmanship and extravagant designs captured the zeitgeist. His elegant, classic pumps were particularly popular with celebrities and nobility. Princess Diana is said to have been one of his regular customers. His niece Sandra Choi was already working in the workshop at this time. In 1996, Tamara Mellon discovered the couture shoemaker and, as a fashion editor, was aware of the current demand for elegant, wearable women's shoes. She financed and founded the shoe fashion label “Jimmy Choo” together with Jimmy Choo. With Sandra Choi as creative director, they opened the first boutique on London's Motcomb Street - the beginning of a global career.
Jimmy Choo goes Hollywood
“I lost my choo,” this line from Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex in the City” has cult status among fans of the label. The feather sandal “Feather” by Jimmy Choo, which the popular leading actress wore in the series, became world famous. The same applies to the black peep toes made of patent leather, which are among the bestsellers today and of course also find a place of honor in our designer second hand shop. Just two years after opening in London, Jimmy Choo expanded to America and brought his shoe designs to the red carpet. Young Hollywood stars in particular quickly fell in love with the stilettos with stiletto heels, pumps with extravagant patterns and platform sandals. Jimmy Choo is now considered a red carpet label.
From the beginning, the designer's style was very versatile and surprising. The collections impress with both simple models and extravagant creations. However, you can always rely on one thing: Jimmy Choo stands for the highest quality in terms of material and workmanship. Today, in addition to women's shoes, the label also includes men's shoes, handbags, leather goods, scarves, glasses, sunglasses and perfumes. There are around 200 boutiques worldwide.
