Michael Kors – The story of the exceptional designer behind the brand
Like no other brand, the Michael Kors brand is very closely linked to its founder and designer - to the company's namesake, Michael Kors.
Michael David Kors was born Karl Anderson on August 9, 1959 on Long Island, New York State, USA. When his mother married the entrepreneur Bill Kors and he adopted the young Karl, he took his last name and also chose a new first name at the same time.
Because his mother wanted her son to have a career in show business, Michael David Kors appeared in various television spots at a young age. However, after graduating from school, Kors decided to study design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, which he did not finish and dropped out early. Instead, he focused entirely on his own fashion label, Michael Kors LLC, which he founded during his studies.
The rapid start of the Michael Kors brand
After founding Michael Kors LLC in 1981, Kors designed his first women's collection, which was immediately stocked by two of the largest and most prestigious luxury fashion department stores, Bergdorf Goodman and Saks Fifth Avenue.
Kors held his first fashion show three years later in 1984. Here he presented minimalist and American sportswear for women, with which he was immediately able to make a good name for himself as a designer in the fashion world. His fashion at this time was characterized by the fact that the clothing he designed was both comfortable to wear and visually impressive due to its outstanding design. So sportswear, previously seen as just a typical American fashion phenomenon, became a success around the world.
Kors built on this success in the following years and added, among other things, men's fashion, jewelry, handbags and sunglasses to its range.
