Polo Ralph Lauren - classic style in a sporty guise
Always oriented towards the spirit of the times and the unmistakable Polo Pony - the designer label Polo Ralph Lauren stands like no other for the combination of European fashion with American classic elements. It all started in 1967 when Ralph Lauren acquired the rights to the “Polo” brand from Brooks Brothers. At that time, it was a specialist supplier for the elegant sport of polo. After founding the tie shop “Polo Fashion”, Ralph Lauren expanded his range to include a new men's collection in 1972 - the birth of the short-sleeved shirt in 24 different colors for men, which is now celebrated as THE polo shirt all over the world. You can also find the women's collections in the preppy style with the elegant, reserved and tradition-conscious clothing as timeless classics in our designer second hand online shop.
Polo Ralph Lauren – It started with a tie
After his military service, Ralph Lauren worked as a fashion salesman for the American company Brooks Brothers. However, he then ended up working for the tie manufacturer Beau Brummell, whom he convinced to design his own line of ties in 1967. He presented this in the Empire State Building and with success. Shortly afterwards he acquired the rights to Brooks Brothers, founded a tie shop and designed his first men's line, which he was allowed to sell in the well-known department store Bloomingdale's just two years later. The designer made the finest flannel suits and dress shirts from high-quality sports shirt materials. In 1971, he opened his own boutique on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills with the women's line. The well-known, embroidered Polo Pony was already found on the next collections.
The world fame of the Polo Ralph Lauren polo shirt
The fashion breakthrough came in 1972. Ralph Lauren launched the men's polo shirt in 24 colors. The classic has always been made of high-quality cotton piqué and has the Polo Pony embroidered on the chest with 982 stitches. Over time, the material selection in other collections was supplemented with modern fabrics. The typical “American Sportswear” is still the label’s most successful piece of clothing to this day. Ralph Lauren was also able to establish itself in the women's world with a European interpretation of preppy style. Materials such as tweed, checked patterns, sweater vests and pleated skirts are characteristic of elite college fashion. Jackie Kennedy particularly appreciated this look.
Over the years, the designer has designed numerous outfits for major films in history, such as the suits for Robert Redford in the 1974 film adaptation of ""The Great Gatsby"" or dresses for actress Gwyneth Paltrow in ""Shakespeare in Love"". Over the years, Ralph Lauren expanded its range to include fragrances, a homewear collection and the Polo Bear, which has become a playful trademark as a stuffed animal. Today Kevin Carrigan is head designer at Ralph Lauren.
