From Schumacher to trendsetter – The story of Salvatore Ferragamo
The moving history of the Salvatore Ferragamo label began in the golden 20s. Shortly after its founding, the company was considered a byword for Italian luxury. Hollywood celebrities like Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich became aware of Ferragamo and asked the creative head to furnish them. To date, over 350 patents and over 20,000 shoe models can be traced back to the founder and designer. The label has lost little of its fundamental magic to this day: both men and women can now enjoy elegant and eye-catching designer fashion. The range no longer just includes shoes.
Salvatore Ferragamo was born as the eleventh of 14 children and his early years were shaped by his future career: at the age of nine he made the first shoes for his sister for her confirmation. What fascinated the Italian in his childhood quickly developed into a lasting passion. In Naples he completed training as a shoemaker. Because his brother opened a shoe factory in Boston, he decided to emigrate to the USA after successfully completing his studies. But Ferragamo wanted to move on shortly after arriving, to Santa Barbara and the famous Hollywood. Thanks to the impressive quality and craftsmanship, he quickly secured the attention of local stars such as Audrey Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich.
The founder back home
In the decades that followed, Salvatore Ferragamo, who had since returned to Italy, caused a sensation worldwide. In 1938, for example, the fashion designer invented the wedge heel made of cork, and of course he immediately registered a patent for this achievement. In the 1950s, ballerinas made it into the headlines. The sandal developed for Judy Garland also generated hype around the label. All of these milestones did little to change the quality standards in production. Only selected materials and raw materials make it into Salvatore Ferragamo's production. When making shoes, the designers always develop classic aesthetic designs that are mixed with modern influences. In this way, shoes are continually created that impress women and now also men all over the world.
As a pioneer, the company founder sets new standards in the shoe trade. Classics such as pumps, as well as the popular sneakers, are among the highlights in the label's selection. It-pieces such as high heels and slippers complement this base. In addition to elegant and comfortable shoe fashion, the brand is also active in the handbag segment. Here, the creative department works with classic and style-conscious colors, complemented by chic applications and patterns. In addition, Salvatore Ferragamo successfully launches clothing items, from summer dresses to exquisite belts.
