Dorothee Schumacher took her first steps into the fashion world during her training at Peek & Cloppenburg, the well-known clothing store in Düsseldorf. After successfully completing her studies, she immediately completed an internship in an Italian knitting factory in order to expand and deepen her skills. The young German then moved to France. Here she was primarily inspired by the French fashion designer Madame Grès and makes it her mission to adapt the unique designs into the 21st century.
In 1986 she founded the Schumacher label with her then husband. The company headquarters was and still is Mannheim. The company is located here in a modern industrial loft. The ambitious designer's first collection was manageable: just three T-shirts - but they had something special. Dorothee Schumacher made a statement with her playful details and bold cuts and the first orders came quickly.
The next milestone followed in 1994 with the expansion into Italy. From this point on, the female creations, which thrilled with their characteristic, romantic charm and timeless, elegant lines, conquered the whole world.
The secret of Schumacher's worldwide success
Dorothee Schumacher is a designer with heart and soul, but also a family man through and through. The mother of four children knows how to breathe life into her unique collections, making every shirt, blouse and dress something very special. Light fabrics such as silk or chiffon are mainly used, whose cuts emphasize sensual femininity. These are rounded off by playful details such as bows, ruffles and flounces. Delicate patterns can also be found in her collections.
Today, the women's collection of clothing, shoes and accessories is represented in more than 600 fashion houses worldwide and dresses women from Tokyo to New York. In 2006, the German label had the honor of outfitting the famous actresses Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep for the film “The Devil Wears Prada”. Other famous fans of timeless fashion include Elle Macpherson and Jessica Alba. At the same time, Dorothee Schumacher launched an educational project for disadvantaged girls in Nepal and is a juror for the “European Design Awards Apolda” for the promotion of young fashion designers.
