Yves Saint Laurent – the enfant terrible of the fashion world

Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent discovered his love for costumes while he was still at school and became a designer for all school theater productions. His passion for clothing brought him to the renowned fashion school École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture in Paris at the age of 17. He then took up his first job at Christian Dior. At just 21 years old, he was promoted to art director. The first collection “Ligne Trapèze” for Dior turned the fashion world on its head and enjoyed huge success. Until now, the wasp waist was an absolute must for women; With the new trapezoidal shapes, the constricting, uncomfortably fitting costumes for women were now over. Saint Laurent had thus initiated a real fashion liberation for women.

The company Yves Saint Laurent

After Dior, Yves set up his own business with his partner Pierre Bergé and founded the company Yves Saint Laurent. The first collection shook up the Paris fashion world and impressed with its unique, clear lines and the stylish androgyny that always characterized his fashion. He was inspired by artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and works of art by Matisse and Picasso. The biggest fashion coup came in 1966 with the introduction of “Le Smoking”, the first tuxedo for women to date, which skilfully showcased the woman's silhouette. Bianca Jagger even wore a white tuxedo by Yves Saint Laurent at her wedding to Mick Jager, making a real statement about emancipation. Timelessly elegant pieces from Saint Laurent can also be found in the Buddy&Selly online shop. This allows you to make your very own fashion statement!

More than just fashion

In the 1970s, the well-known house also brought its first fragrances onto the market, which are still considered timeless classics today. For the men's fragrance “YSL pour Homme”, the fashion designer had himself photographed naked for the print campaign, which of course caused a huge stir. Classic and iconic pieces are also the famous handbags from Saint Laurent. Whether clutches or handbags – the attention to detail makes them elegant eye-catchers. It's worth checking out our Buddy&Selly online shop to find your own It bag.

Saint Laurent without Yves

In 2002 Yves retired from the fashion business. But that doesn't mean that things went quiet for the brand. With the signing of Tom Ford at the end of the 90s, an enfant terrible of the fashion world was once again at the helm. Ford brought new energy and gave the brand a fresh and sexy image. He also staged provocatively, such as the actress Sophie Dahl naked and only wearing stilettos for the perfume Opium. After Yves' death in 2008, creative director Hedi Slimane was hired for the company and turned Yves Saint Laurent into Saint Laurent. In our online shop Buddy&Selly we have lots of unique designer second-hand pieces from Saint Laurent on offer. You can easily make fashion statements and guarantee yourself an iconic look of timeless elegance. It's best to get started right away!
